A torsion snubber consists of a case, a driven component, a space where the leaf springs and rubber elements are placed, leaf springs and rubber elements and driven component levers. The case is the drive component of the snubber. Leaf springs are set in prestressed state between the firm supports in the case and the driven element springs. Rotating the case causes the springs to compress in the direction of the rotation and carry the torque to the driven element. The torsion is reduced by the dampening effect of the leaf springs and the rubber elements. This torsion snubber is made to work in one direction; this achieves a greater relative rotation angle of the case and the driven element.
Background of the invention:
This invention applies to torsion snubbers that reduce the torque created when marine gearboxes are turned on and started in boats with engines of low and medium power. Considering the reliability and the price of marine gearboxes, mechanical gearboxes are most commonly used in those boats and they are conical or flanged. When turning on and especially when starting (driving forward, driving backward) the engine, an instantaneous and a very high torque, much higher than nominal, affects the gearbox, as consequence of the drive component inertia (propeller, gears...). This torque is exactly what causes uncomfortable and noisy starting. Therefore a torsion snubber is installed between the ship engine flywheel and the marine gearbox, to achieve a most effective power transfer to the propeller.
The most common and the simplest torsion snubbers are constructed with cylindrical coil springs. Their flaw is a small rotation angle between the drive component and the driven component, so the mentioned torque causes a relative rotation of the drive and the driven component to the delimiter. The result is the negligible reduction of the noisy starting problem.
The main goal of this invention is to completely prevent mechanical concussions when the marine gearbox is turned on or started.
